Navigating Menopause: a Qualitative Exploration of the Mental Health Implications for Women With Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract

Aim: With survival rates increasing, the impact of menopause on patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is of considerable importance. Previous research has mostly focused on pregnancy planning. There is limited research on the psychological impact of the menopause on women with CHD. The aim of this research is to explore the impact of menopause in women with congenital heart diseases. Method(s): First stage - systematic search of APA Psyc Articles, Medline Ultimate, APA PsycInfo, APA PsycTests, CINAHL Ultimate, will be conducted using terms capturing reproductive health, mental health, and menopause in women with congenital heart conditions. Second stage - qualitative interviews of 16 women with CHD (within one NHS Trust, UK) who are transitioning or recently transitioned through the menopause (40-60 years old). Result(s): Results from the systematic review show the limited participatory research conducted on the theme. Preliminary results from the interviews suggest the need for bespoke mental health support for this unique group of patients. Conclusion(s): Our results can influence guidelines for mental health provision in women with CHD transition through menopause and to gain a more holistic approach in healthcare by bringing the voice of the patients.
