Cardiac surgery outcomes: from mortality metrics to morbidity measures

Abstract

Advances in cardiac surgery have greatly improved survival, yet postoperative morbidity remains common and often overlooked. Complications such as pain, infection and respiratory issues significantly affect patients' quality of life and recovery. With an ageing population and increasing multimorbidity, addressing morbidity alongside mortality is crucial. In this month's editorial, the authors call for a shift in focus towards comprehensive patient outcomes, highlighting the essential role of nursing and allied health professionals in supporting recovery and improving long-term wellbeing after cardiac surgery.
