Does a central venous catheter influence fluid and vasopressor use in patients undergoing high risk colorectal resection?

Abstract

Background: Since the concept of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) was introduced in 1997, there has been increasing evidence that restricting intravenous (IV) fluid administration improves outcomes1. The correct strategy however remains controversial2. We sought to investigate whether, routine, pre-operative, placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) resulted in smaller volumes of fluid being administered in the operating room and beyond, thus raising questions around the dichotomy of using a more invasive device but lessening fluid burden.
