EVALUATION of the EFFECTIVENESS of PRE TRANSPLANT EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR, on FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY of STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION PATIENTS

Abstract

Background: Stem cell transplantation often results in significant physical decline and fatigue due to intensive treatment and prolonged hospitalisation. An interdisciplinary education seminar led by, Clinical Nursing Specialists, Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Psychology educate patients on the physical and mental impact of transplantation and the benefits of preparing for admission. This Study evaluates patients pre transplant functional capacity and examines the seminars impact on functional outcome at discharge. Method(s): Functional outcome measures were evaluated through a retrospective analysis of patient's who did and did not attend the educational seminar. Key metrics included the 1 Minute Sit to Stand Test (1 STS), Handgrip Strength (HG), and Calve Circumference (CC). Results were further categorised into conditioning Regime's. Result(s): Pre and Post-transplant outcome measures were calculated into mean average change in performance. (Table present) Conclusion(s): Patients undergoing Stem Cell Transplants experience significant decline in physical function. This is influenced by the type of conditioning regime. However, pre admission seminar has shown potential benefit to post transplant outcomes. Highlighting the possible benefits of a Prehabilitation service to this population.
