Abstract
Introduction: Nasal malignancy remains the leading cause of rhinectomy. Factors including size of the defect, patient's medical history, preference, and previous radiotherapy may render patients unsuitable for reconstructive surgery, making prostheses a viable alternative for restoring aesthetics and function. The loss of nasal structure often poses profound psychological and emotional challenges. This review explores prosthesis options post-rhinectomy, including a case involving two prostheses variants. Purpose(s): This analysis seeks to explore and critically evaluate treatment options for nasal prostheses, along with factors that influence their success and patient satisfaction. Method(s): We comprehensively reviewed prosthetic options for nasal reconstruction. Furthermore, we dive into the journey of a patient who underwent total rhinectomy and her experiences with adhesive-retained versus implant-retained prostheses. Result(s): Silicone nasal prostheses can be retained using adhesives, spectacles, magnets, tissue undercuts, or osseointegrated implants. Beyond aesthetics, prosthetic noses can humidify the nasal cavity, protect the underlying delicate tissue, allow further biopsies, and do not delay post-operative radiotherapy. Factors affecting clinical success and patient satisfaction include durability, aesthetics, functionality, and psychological impact. Limitations include the synthetic nature, daily cleaning, and the need for regular maintenance as their colour and detail may deteriorate over time. Implant-retained prostheses show higher patient satisfaction when compared to adhesive-retained options, offering superior stability. Nevertheless, complications include peri-implantitis, screw losses, and infection. Conclusion(s): Nasal defects profoundly impact quality of life, highlighting the importance of high-quality rehabilitation to improve well-being. Implant-retained prostheses demonstrate low failure rates, enabling surveillance of high-risk areas and improved patient comfort. Long implants further enhance cleansibility, stability, satisfaction, and clinical success.Copyright © 2025
