Abstract
Introduction: Recent work by our group has demonstrated the increasing understanding of the link between established periodontal disease and surgical site infection in the fractured mandible. The extent of basic dental disease in our catchment area has been described with a prevalence of 80% for periodontal disease, and 39% for untreated caries. Primary care dentistry in the United Kingdom is adversarially funded, making it impossible for patients to receive necessary dental care post trauma.
