Abstract

Introduction: Mandibular fractures managed by intraoral incisions according to Champy principles are prone to surgical site infection, with estimates varying from 5-20% on diagnostic criteria. Risk factors are well described and include smoking, substance abuse and systemic factors such as diabetes mellitus. We recently challenged the role of smoking and demonstrated that late stage periodontal disease is a significant risk factor. What is poorly understood is the relationship between periodontal disease, smoking and diabetes in mandibular fracture outcomes.
